Barry J Ewell Family History Class

During the BYU education week, I promised to provide an additional set of presentations that I use in my Ward for helping to teach the family history class.   My delay in sending them out  is due to finding the time to make the changes I desired to reflect the needs of the class and being able to fit the presentation into a 40 to 45 min time block of Sunday School.

The presentations are in PowerPoint and PDF format (this is format that makes it easy for you to read, reduced the size of each presentation,  but it will not allow you to make changes to the articles or PowerPoints.)  This requires that you have Adobe PDF Reader  (or another PDF reader) on your computer.  You probably already have this software on your computer.   Once you download the presentations, simply click on the material and it should automatically open if you have the software.

If you would like to download the latest PDF Reader, go here

http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

If you use the PowerPoints,  you have my permission to use and change the material as you need to for your own classes.

Free Download of PowerPoint Viewer 2003
PowerPoint Viewer 2003 lets you view full-featured presentations created in PowerPoint.

I have also been asked what I consider to be some of the things I have done that makes the family history role successful in the Ward.

First if you haven’t been trained, consider the following:

1.       Class is six weeks long.

2.       I scheduled a Ward Temple day 12 weeks from the date of the first class which is a two day event in our ward.  This the date where the ward will help the family class members do the temple work for their research.   This is usually a two day event.  For example:

a.        Friday:       Baptisms for the Dead.

b.       Saturday:    Invitatory, Endowments, and sealings

·         We will have anywhere 20 to 30 persons form the Ward help out on the Ward Temple day.

·         By setting the Ward Temple day it provides a deadline for the class to work towards and Ward.

·         We start announcing the Ward Temple day and sending around signup sheets about 4 weeks prior to the actual day.

3.       About the 3rd week of the classes I will set up meetings with the class members to go and interview and set a plan of action to help each family with their genealogy needs.

4.       As a class, I will set up 1-2 times each month to go to the Regional Family Center or the Family History Library in Salt Lake City and spend a 6-8 hour period.   I will try to have a least 1 person to work 1X1 with each member of the class.

5.       When necessary I will spend up several hours doing some foundation work on the internet to help the families find the necessary resources.

6.       I have a set of files that have on a thumb drive that I can easily download to member computers as needed which includes:  PAF 5.2, PDF Reader, and PDFs of the presentations for the class and other material as needed.

7.       I (my wife and I) try to meet with each of the families as often as needed in their homes.

8.       I stay away from trying to teach persons how to use the group setting at church or anywhere else.  I find the PowerPoint slides work well to give an idea and then I can work with them at there skill level in the home.

It is very important that all center directors and family history consultants (center staff) go to http://consultant.familysearch.org and register. You will receive training material and online instruction in many areas, including the new FamilySearch.

The Family History Center in Salt Lake also has very good training for consultants. If you are interested, or know anyone that would be, in attending any of the lessons please e-mail me (FHL-FHConsultant@ldschurchorg) and they will reserve a seat for your.  Seating is limited, and will be by reservation.

Other links that you will like to help teach members of  the class, many of who have not used the computer very much.

Regards,
